The temple also known as the Yonghegong is one of the largest Buddhist temples in the world. It dates back to the 17th century and in contemporary China it serves mainly as a tourist attraction and a symbolic expression of respect for Tibetan minorities. The temple has a typical Chinese compositional concept, yet it is decorated with Tibetan motifs. The largest part of the building called The Pavilion holds an 18 metres high standing Buddha statue that was carved from a single trunk, therefore,it has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records.
