Znojmo rotunda is the most precious historical monument in the city. This historic gem is listed in the national cultural monuments list. The round shape construction goes far beyond the borders of the Czech Republic and is seen as extraordinary in European cultural history. The rotunda has valuable murals, which depict the rulers of the Czech lands, therefore, it is referred to as the oldest picture gallery portrayal of the beginning of our statehood.

The rotunda dates from the second half of the 9th century. It is witness of the oldest history of Znojmo. It is located near Znojmo castle and partly is surrounded by the Znojmo brewery grounds. An interesting feature of the history, is that building in the 19th century firstly served as a pigsty, then as a ballroom with a taproom, later as a baskets workshop as well as a skin depot. Now the rotunda is open to the public, but only for limited periods and allows only small groups, so the rare paintings don´t get damaged by moisture.
