Another magnificent sight in Brno is the Mahen Theatre. The building dates back to 1882 and it was built in a style combining Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Baroque and Neoclassicism. The theatre is named after a famous Czech poet, writer and journalist Jiří Mahen. An interesting historical fact is that the Mahen Theatre was the first one in Europe equipped with electric lighting, despite the fact that electricity was not yet installed in Brno. Thomas A. Edison solved this problem so that he had a small power station built next to the theatre. Parts of Edison's original electrical wiring are displyed in a small exhibition in the foyer of the theatre. The Mahen Theatre has become a national technical monument and it comes under the National Theatre in Brno.
